SMA
now has the state of the art "US" series with built-in
DC disconnect. The SMA Sunny Boy series is perfect for everything
from moderately sized residential systems to large industrial three-phase
systems. Now with the introduction of the US series, we are ready
to offer more flexibility for many applications.
Sunny
Boy inverters are housed in a watertight NEMA 3R outdoor enclosure,
and can operate in extreme conditions (ambient temperatures of -13ºF
to +113ºF). They can even be mounted right on the roof along with
the modules.
The
Sunny Boy is designed to support PV modules in series, increasing
efficiency and eliminating the need for expensive DC distribution
systems and cabling. The Sunny Boy inverters increase efficiency
further because they run a separate MPP tracking for each single
string. Each Sunny Boy inverter is equipped with a separate and
autonomous grid monitoring facility that enables the user to hook
up the AC output to any point within the electric distribution system
of house.
One
high voltage series string of solar modules can be connected to
each inverter, vastly simplifying design and installation. The result
is no mismatching from parallel connections and maximum Power Point
Tracking for every series string. System expansion is easy - simply
add more inverters and series strings of solar modules. This modular
approach results in a cost effective way to build large systems.
- Simplified
system design and lowest installation costs
- No DC distribution
necessary
- System
diagnosis and monitoring via powerline
- Extended
Operating Temperature Range (-13ºF
to +113ºF)
- NEMA
3R Weatherproof Case for Outside Installation
- Equipped
with MC and AC connector
Sunny
Boy system diagnosis and control can be transmitted to your PC via
wireless or RS-485.

Sunny
Boy Advantages
Optimal Efficiency
The Sunny Boy inverter
family convinces with a real efficiency of up to 97.1%. The advantages
of the string technology such as connection of the modules in series,
missing diode arrays, minimized mismatching losses and so on increase
the PV system efficiency by another 1 to 3% compared to others.
Sunny Boy provides the best available system efficiency.
Surge Voltage
Protection
Sunny Boy inverters
are equipped with thermally monitored varistors on the DC side -
a male function of these is indicated with a LED and can be supervised
with a remote monitoring system.
Reliability
Highest reliability
and a lifetime of over 20 years were major aspects taken into account
during the design of the Sunny Boy string inverters. The newest
SMA series of inverters has a 10 year warranty.
Simplest Installation
The modules are switched
to a string and then connected to the Sunny Boy. DC distribution
cases and connection boxes are no longer necessary anymore resulting
in drastically reduced installation costs.
Connect It Anywhere
The Sunny Boy string
inverter can be connected to any available part of the AC distribution
system of the house, e.g. in an attic or a similar room.
Mount It Anywhere
The NEMA 3R rated case
and the wide temperature range allow the Sunny Boy to be mounted
nearly anywhere. The Sunny Boy can be installed directly on the
rack of the PV modules, on the roof or on the wall of your house.
A world-wide usage of the inverter is therefore possible.
Diagnosis And
Communication Via Wireless or RS-485
Of course you can communicate
with your Sunny Boy. Measurement values and messages are transmitted
to a PC via wireless or RS485 cable. You can be continuously informed
about the situation of your PV plant. You can even view statistics
of your solar system on the Internet!

Utility-tie
Inverters
Utility inverters
change DC power into AC power to be fed into the utility grid. A
power system with this type of inverter uses the utility company
as a storage battery.
When the sun
is shining, your electricity comes from the PV array, via the inverter.
If the PV array is making more power than you are using, the excess
is sold to the utility (power company) through an electric meter.
If you use more power than the PV array can supply, the utility
makes up the difference.
This type of
system makes the most sense if you have utility power, because there
are no batteries to maintain or replace, but it has a very long
payback period and may not be cost-effective at todays electric
rates. The SMA Sunny Boy and Fronius
inverters are examples of utility tie inverters.
