About Deka/East Penn Manufacturing
East Penn Manufacturing operates the world's largest single-site lead-acid battery facility on a 520-acre campus in Lyon Station, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1946 and still family-owned, East Penn produces every Deka battery using vertically integrated American manufacturing, from 99.9% pure virgin lead smelting through final assembly, with over 250 quality control checks per unit. Their proprietary Individual Plate Formation process makes them the only reserve power battery manufacturer in North America to individually form and inspect every plate before it goes into a cell.
ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified, East Penn was the first U.S. lead battery manufacturer to achieve UL1973 safety certification across its entire reserve power line. Their recycling operations recover 99% of lead, 100% of polypropylene, and 100% of acid, processing over 13 million used batteries annually.
Deka Gel & AGM Battery FAQ
What is the difference between Deka GEL and AGM batteries?
AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) batteries use a sponge-like glass mat separator that absorbs liquid electrolyte, making them non-spillable and safe if tipped or punctured. However, because the electrolyte is fully absorbed, AGM cells operate in an "acid-starved" state and are not ideal for heavy deep discharge cycling.
GEL batteries immobilize the electrolyte in a thick gel, which provides more available electrolyte overall. This makes GEL cells better suited for repeated deep discharge applications and gives them greater tolerance for occasional overcharging. Both types are sealed, valve-regulated (VRLA), and maintenance-free.
Why do Deka GEL batteries have a longer cycle life?
Several design features contribute to extended cycle life in Deka GEL cells. East Penn uses a patented calcium/copper grid alloy where copper acts as a grain refiner, creating irregularly shaped microscopic grains in the lead grid that resist corrosion and extend structural life. The grids are also thicker than standard designs for added corrosion resistance.
GEL cells are inherently protected against destructive deep discharge because they are acid-limited. The battery draws energy from the acid before tapping the plates, which prevents the ultra-deep discharge that causes plate shedding and accelerated positive grid corrosion. Ultra-premium glass mat dual-insulating separators embed into the plates over time, further reducing plate shedding.
How many cycles can a Deka GEL battery deliver?
Cycle life depends on depth of discharge. Shallower discharge cycles significantly extend battery life:
| Depth of Discharge | Typical Cycle Life |
|---|---|
| 100% | 500 cycles |
| 75% | 750 cycles |
| 50% | 1,100 cycles |
| 25% | 2,500 cycles |
| 10% | 6,000 cycles |
For most off-grid solar applications where batteries are cycled to 50% depth of discharge, Deka GEL cells typically deliver over 1,100 cycles.
What makes Deka's GEL formulation different from other manufacturers?
East Penn uses an exclusive thixotropic GEL formula that is precisely formulated, mixed, and controlled to ensure proper "set" in every battery. This consistency matters because the gel must immobilize the electrolyte uniformly throughout the cell. Combined with 99.9% pure virgin lead and over 250 quality control checks per battery, including a full discharge and recharge cycle at the factory after initial charging, Deka GEL batteries are built to a higher standard than most competitors.
Are Deka Solar batteries safe to ship and transport?
Yes. All Deka Solar GEL and AGM batteries are sealed, non-spillable, and classified as non-hazardous goods for surface transport. They are also approved for air transport under IATA regulation A-67. With a self-discharge rate of less than 2% per month, they maintain charge well during extended shipping and storage periods.
